It is normal for videsi (why not?) kids to move out of their parental home and live separately. At least that is what the movies show us.
What about our own India? Of late, I have been toying with the idea of getting a place of my own and moving out. Maybe I cannot afford to buy a house right away, but hey there are apartments small enough for a girl my age to rent, right?
Why Don’t More Indian Kids Move Out Of Their Parental Home?
- Because hey, my parents have enough money!
It is the parents who often reinforce this in the mind of the children when they are growing up. The children know at the back of their mind that their parents are going to move on (oh come on! Accept it) and will not be able to enjoy their savings of this life in their next. Everything automatically comes to us children right!
- Feeling of Guilt
They spent the best years of their life trying to raise you well. Now that you are capable and they have become old, would it be fair to abandon them and pursue your own dreams? Parents will understand, provided you know how and what you are telling them. This is not abandoning them, all you are trying to do is to build a life for yourself.
- Log kya kahenge?
This is the cursed sentence that has killed many dreams and clipped many wings even before they tasted flight. Our society is one which is very much concerned in what happens in the neighbour’s house even while your own house is on fire. Do you really want to live a life wondering what the others might be saying about how you live your life?
- It is a big bad world out there
The inherent patriarchy in our system threatens a woman who walks down the road all by herself. The others are bad and instead of correcting them, the rest of the world has to lock itself in.
- You can move to your husband’s house when you get married
This is a statement oft repeated to women. Trust me, there is nothing worse than being re-imprisoned without even allowing you to taste freedom. My choice of words might not be the best here but the emotions are all there.
Have you moved out of your parents’ home and stayed in a different place? Why?
