It was on the first day of college that we met for the first time. I noticed that he was dressed differently from the others in the class. A pure white shirt was his attire every single day, like he was teaching himself to be disciplined or something.
Over the course of many weeks of classes and college politics and summer holidays, we became best buddies. Whenever the situation permitted, he would tell me that This too shall pass. The full meaning of this I grasped only on the day I was in deep trouble. He came and sat next to me and repeated the same words yet again – This too shall pass.
It brought a strange sense of relief and lightness upon being reminded that there is a sunrise after every sunset. For a night, there will be a morning.
I have since then been repeating these lines to myself even if it is a happy or a sad situation. It helps me keep calm and collected and sane.
In my search for the origin andΒ meaning of this quote, I stumbled upon this article.
This phrase is believed to have been originated in the works of Sufi poets of Persia. One popular fable associated with this phrase is that of a great king who summoned the wise men of his kingdom to work on a ringβa ring that would have the ability to make him happy when he is sad, and sad when he is happy. Hence, the wise men came up with this phrase: This Too Will Pass.
Another interesting story in reference to the origin of this adage is this: an English poet Edward FitzGerald, in the year 1852, included an unattributed version in his collection, Polonius: A Collection of Wise Saws and Modern Instances, named as Solomon’s Seal. Here, he writes about a sultan who requests King Solomon to give him a sentence that would never lose its value and will stand true in every situation, be it good or bad. Hence, Solomon responded saying, “This too will pass away.”
