Before I Go – Colleen Oakley ~ Book Review

A heart-wrenching debut novel in the best-selling tradition of P.S. I Love You about a young woman with breast cancer who undertakes a mission to find a new wife for her husband before she passes away.

Twenty-seven-year-old Daisy already beat breast cancer three years ago. How can this be happening to her again?

On the eve of what was supposed to be a triumphant “Cancerversary” with her husband Jack to celebrate three years of being cancer-free, Daisy suffers a devastating blow: her doctor tells her that the cancer is back, but this time it’s an aggressive stage four diagnosis. She may have as few as four months left to live. Death is a frightening prospect—but not because she’s afraid for herself. She’s terrified of what will happen to her brilliant but otherwise charmingly helpless husband when she’s no longer there to take care of him. It’s this fear that keeps her up at night, until she stumbles on the solution: she has to find him another wife.

With a singular determination, Daisy scouts local parks and coffee shops and online dating sites looking for Jack’s perfect match. But the further she gets on her quest, the more she questions the sanity of her plan. As the thought of her husband with another woman becomes all too real, Daisy’s forced to decide what’s more important in the short amount of time she has left: her husband’s happiness—or her own?

My Review :

Her world changes, when on what was to be her ‘Cancerversary’ she finds out that she has ‘lots of cancer’ and her doctor post check ups confirms that she may have only a few more months to live. To while away her time and to keep herself sane, she decides to spend her time finding her husband a new wife, one that would be perfect for him.

Daisy is very practical and is somewhat a taskmaster with her husband. She knows for a fact that in her absence, her husband would be having cereal for lunch and dinner too; which is why she resorts to lurking in cafes and dating sites, trying to find a perfect replacement for her. Colleen Oakley’s debut novel takes us on a emotional journey of a woman who constantly tries to find her husband a spouse in spite of the fact that she gets jealous at times and almost regrets her decision.

The story is mostly the story of Daisy’s battle with cancer, her acceptance and denial of the disease that is eating her from within. The characters are sketched well and are believable. The story is heart breaking tragic tale and moved me to tears. The whole story is pushed on by Daisy, but it is her husband Jack who makes the final and the best concluding chapter for the story. You will have to read the book to find out what exactly happened.

Before I Go by Colleen Oakley is a Not To Be Missed book.

I got this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest feedback.

  1. Reminded me of the movie Love Story. Then also I cried. and now you made me cry .. Had avoided John Greene’s Fault in your Stars.. Though this book is calling out to me, I don’t think I have the guts to read it. Kudos to you for reviewing it …
