It was nothing big, but important all the same. It had been there, he grew up beneath it, but never realized its worth, instead cursed it for always littering his garden with brown and yellow leaves.
As long as it was there, he never thought of giving the value it deserved, and today after destroying it, he lamented over the gap left by the big banyan tree standing tall with its arms outstretched, protecting his children from the sun when they were playing in the courtyard.
Now he missed it, such a vital part of his childhood – uprooted without a trace.

And thanks for giving the prompt for us rake our minds 🙂

Thank you 🙂
How often does that happen “You do not realise what you had till it is gone”!
Oh yeah… we lose quite a lot of things/people because we do not realize their worth in time.
Trees are indeed God’s blessings. I hope mankind does not lose this treasure.
Cynthia Rodrigues Manchekar’s latest…Lost Treasure – a drabble (Day 7: UBC July 2013)
Yes Cynthia. We need to learn how to protect and preserve Nature.
It reminds me of my own grief of losing a tree I loved… My mom used to recount the story every year on my birthday, when she brought me home from the hospital and the Chinese elm in our backyard was just starting to bud. Every year on my birthday its first buds would appear. The tree grew with me throughout the years, until it became so huge that is was chopped down to my dismay. It was a heartbreaking loss. Thanks for the story. It is really touching.

A tree that grew up along with you… must have been special. Sad that it had to be cut down though.
How we end up realising value of thngs after they are lost huh!
🙁 Hai na..
A very good interpretation. Trees are such a blessing, but we often don’t realize their worth!
Thank you Roshni. Trees are just one other thing we don’t realize the worth of 🙂
That is lovely. It brings so many thoughts to mind. Metaphorically never realising the value in something until it’s gone and how we willy nilly think we can destroy nature for our own good.
Jacqui Malpass’s latest…Affirmations for a healthy wealthy life
Exactly. The tree was just an example to convey the thought. Glad to see you here 🙂
Banyan trees are huge and give shade and protection. Uprooting of the tree is sad.
Uprooting of any tree is sad.
True… we only start realizing how valuable a thing or person when it /he is lost!!
A wonderful take on the prompt! 🙂

Bhavya,
how could he cut a Banyan Tree…
that’s like hacking your grandparents mercilessly and then saying..oops..I shouldnt have..cruel comparison..byt thats how it feels..
Bhavyakutty I am not angry at you..I am angry at the negative character you potrayed so well that I want to slap him right now..
I know Dee, a tree is not just a tree. It might have lived for more number of years than you, have seen the world and sacrificed itself n number of times. It makes me feel so sad when in the name of development the first thing they do is cut down the trees. 🙁

Oh that made me soooo sad. Khaled Hosseini’s new book And the Mountains Echoed has just such a tree. I’ve written a review on my blog. But I haven’t mentioned the tree.
Great writing.
Thank you Kalpana, I am yet to read that book though. I’ve read his other books and loved them, so I am hopeful the latest would turn out good too.
Too true!!
Trees, playgrounds, old houses are symbolic when it comes to childhood memories!
Beautifully written 🙂
Thank you 🙂
its like a part of yourself being hacked away… lovely take on the prompt 🙂

Thank you…
In fact that is exactly what prompted me to write this story, LP.
my mother always says in malayalam.. you don’t know the value of eyesight till you are blind.. your story reminded me of that.. nice one 🙂
Exactly, when I was writing this, I was reminded of that saying too…
How lovely Bhavya the take on prompt so different. The loss of green cover from mother earth is indeed a much bigger loss of treasure than we can realise even now. Its in fact what we need to pt highest form of stress now keeping in line the recent Uttaranchal case…
And great use of 100 words!
Richa Singh’s latest…“Were my feelings that frivolous?”- Part 7

Indeed Priceless Treasure…
Sheela’s latest…Loving & Living Memories
Yes indeed.
very interpretation.
Thanks Sanjay.
As much as i liked the prompt, i liked your take on it. You have put forward such an important issue and it is high time that we understand and value the importance of nature. Else it will be too late as it is already late. And yes, your storytelling like always is powerful.
P.S: As much as I liked the prompt, I enjoyed writing on it too. Do have a look as see how I crafted my story around your excellent prompt.

And the message of caring for Nature and The Environment is so clear…
That’s nice story, narrated briefly but beautifully. We begin to feel about the value of thing or a person when we miss them for good.
