But I Ain’t

This post is in response to the 7x7x7x7 Writing Prompt, over at WriteTribe

What is the 7x7x7x7 Writing Prompt?

  1. Grab the 7th book from your bookshelf.
  2. Open it up to page 7.
  3. Pinpoint the 7th sentence on the page.
  4. Begin a poem/a piece of prose that begins with that sentence
  5. Limit it in length to 7 lines/7 sentences.

All excited, I hurried over to the bookshelf at home, and voila! Guess what the 7th book was?

The Colour Purple by Alice Walker, and the 7th sentence? “But I Ain’t”

So here goes my attempt.

“But I Ain’t…..”

“How many times do I have to tell you not to use words like ain’t…they are not ever proper English words. Now answer my question before I reach the end of my tether.”

“But I been speaking English all my life!!”

“Aaarghh.. I am not bothered about your language anymore. For God’s sake please speak proper English and dump this black English. Wherever did you pick it up from!!”

“The money? I don’t know nothing!”

Writing to me is therapy, it frightens and comforts at the same time. Liberates like nothing else. A book in my own name is a dream, but a bigger dream would be to write something that haunts the reader even after the last page is turned and the book is shut. I enjoy reading and music, spending time with family whilst battling my social awkwardness.
